Your First Lagos Taxi ride

Your First Lagos Taxi ride

If you are an adventurer like me, who would like to get around the city armed with just your Google map, I guess this hack is for you. As always the rule of the thumb of navigating through Lagos is to outsmart everyone else including yourself.

This is Lagos …

There are loosely three categories or ways you can make your way around the city, on your own.

Let’s start with the illegal one:

Kabu kabu

Simply put, these are unregistered and unmarked vehicles that are being used for Taxi services.  They are usually parked at major junctions and at the entrances to an estate with a placard indicating “car for hire” or sometimes “Taxi”

Just have it the back of your mind that these are unregistered!

I recommend you to read a book titled Kabu kabu by  Nnedi Okorafor with a foreword by Whoopi Goldberg

Lagos Taxis

One color that you cannot miss in Lagos State is the iconic yellow on commercial buses and taxis. The older generation taxi drivers are colloquially referred to as “oko ashewo” which means “the prostitute ’s husband” because …. I will leave that for you to find out(see video at the end of this post !).

The more modern and well organized Taxis organization with better cars and other services such as free onboard Wifi have added more spice to the streets of Lagos. And the Metro Taxi is good at what they do.

Ride-sharing apps

Our goal at Rethink Lagos is to give you the best experience of this fast-paced megacity. Taking into consideration your security as you step foot out of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport

I believe the quickest and surest way to beat the Taxi haggle at the airport is to use a ride-sharing application. Make sure you look out for promo codes and discounts. Do not tie your foreign VISA or Master Card to the app.

Here are some local ride-sharing apps:

Smart Cab

Oga Taxi
