So one of the kings of Social Media, Twitter Inc. recently broke the internet, as Nigeria’s former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was appointed to its board of directors causing it to be one of the trending news in Nigeria, presently. However, she was not the only one to make the list as former World Bank chief, Robert Zoellick was also appointed to the board.
With the aim of driving the company “towards transparency in its global operations”, Omid Kordestani, the Executive Chairman of Twitter acknowledged, “Ngozi and Bob are distinguished leaders with unparalleled global perspective and policy expertise. “We are confident they will be incredible assets to Twitter as we continue to focus on driving transparency and making Twitter a safer, healthier place for everyone who uses our service.”
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was very grateful for this appointment as she tweeted on her official handle @NOIweala “it’s a privilege to work again with Bob. ’Look forward to contributing to the strong and visionary future for @Twitter”. Expressing her appreciation to the company, she again tweeted, “Excited to work with @Jack and an incredible team on the Board of Twitter, a global platform that is such a strong connector of people and ideas.”
The addition of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to the Board of directors of Twitter is such to bring a great diversity to the Twitter Board considering she is not just black but also a Nigerian woman making her the second black woman on the board. This is a plus for the Twitter Company as it has been largely criticized for a lack of diversity on their board.
@vfiorese_ agreed with the addition as he said, “This is interesting! I’m an advocate in #cultural #diversity in the #boardofdirectors as mechanism to increase biz results! I would like to save this TT to check year later if I’m right that @Twitter will accelerate the increasing of #African users after this decision from @jack!”
Sending a congratulatory message via his Facebook page to Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Former president of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GEJ), posted, “I am not surprised that Dr. Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala has been appointed into the board of Twitter. If anyone merits such an appointment, it is definitely a woman who helped her nation manage its finances most prudently and was instrumental to pulling many millions out of poverty. Ngozi, I am proud of you. You served Nigeria most meritoriously and I am more than certain that you would do the same at Twitter. Congratulations. GEJ.
Having served as a Managing Director in the World Bank, worked in a dual ministerial role in the Nigerian government, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has most certainly been in contact with world leaders, financial moguls, and powerhouses. She would definitely be an asset to Twitter especially with her wealth of financial experience from managing Nigeria’s finances and that of other banks and financial institutes chief of which is the World Bank.
One is inclined to think so considering Twitter made it’s first-ever profit (of $91 million for Q4 2017), in over 12 years. Having Ngozi on their team may just be what they need to keep a sustainable growth rate.
This appointment may just be the much-needed rebranding Okonjo-Iweala needs after she was almost smeared with claims of involvement in fraudulent activities and corruption. Her published book, “Fighting corruption is dangerous; the story behind the headlines”, a book apparently about a conspiracy behind flagged headlines, could have been a good comeback from the “allegations” but one may just wonder if this Twitter appointment would go a long way to rebrand her image. I guess time will tell.
We say a hearty congratulations to Ngozi-Okonjo Iweala as we wish her well in her new job role as a member of the Twitter Board of Directors.
#Rethink Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
